On November 8, 2023, Sergii Bortnyk delivered a lecture “Ukrainian Orthodoxy: State and Prospects in Context of the War”. The lecture was held as part of the course “Rethinking and reimagining Ukraine in times of war and after”, proposed for students and other interested persons at the Humboldt University of Berlin. The lecture was held at the invitation of PD Dr. Reinhard Flogaus, head of the Department of Eastern Churches, who himself within the framework of this course delivered a paper “Non-Holy Alliance: Propaganda Justification by the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian-Ukrainian War”.
In his presentation, Sergii Bortnyk spoke about the general situation in the religious sphere of Ukraine, about the history of inter-Orthodox relations over the years of its state independence, about the reasons and prospects of the probable legislative ban of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, about possible standards of the state-church relations and observance of delimitation of the spheres of activity of the state and church in Ukraine.
