In January 2026, Sergii Bortnyk began his third term as a consultant to the Austrian Pro Oriente Foundation, which aims to deepen cooperation between Christians in the East and West. This decision was approved by Josef Gruenwidl, the newly elected Archbishop of Vienna and Primate of Austria, who is the chairman of the foundation’s board of trustees.
Sergii Bortnyk first became a consultant to this foundation in 2017, after completing his term on the commission of young Orthodox and Catholic theologians. One of the notable results of this commission’s work was the volume “Mosaic of Ecumenism: Impulses for the Reception of Orthodox-Catholic Dialogue”. At that time, the Ukrainian theologian was the co-editor and co-author of the volume.
Since then, Sergii Bortnyk has participated in numerous events organised by the Pro Oriente Foundation and has also helped to involve young theologians from Ukraine in dialogue initiatives.
