Within the framework of our website’s educational activities, we are gradually filling in a new section called “Book reviews”. As the name of the new page suggests, we plan to publish reviews of the most important books in the field of academic theology that have been published in recent years. For the most part, the section will contain reviews of English-language studies; however, the reviewers will occasionally also focus on the most significant publications in Ukrainian or Russian.
The first review posted on the website is a survey of the book Fault Lines in the Orthodox World: Geopolitics, Theology, and Diplomacy in Light of the War in Ukraine. This volume, published by Palgrave Macmillan this year and clearly characterized as an interdisciplinary project, was edited by Sebastian Rimestad (University of Leipzig) and Emil Hilton Saggau (Lund University).
The main narrative thread running through the book is the internal fragmentation of the Orthodox world, as well as the Russian-Ukrainian war and its impact on the political, diplomatic, and geopolitical dimensions of relations between the national Orthodox Churches. In his concluding remarks, the reviewer emphasises that the analysed volume “demonstrates that the Orthodox world is experiencing a crisis caused not only by military conflict, but also by ongoing tensions between theology, national ideologies, and geopolitical ambitions. The work is notable for its high-quality academic analysis and original interpretations, which make it a significant contribution to contemporary religious studies and political theology”.
